LAND: The week in review April 23-29
Liberty Action News Digest

Anti-war protests this weekend draw tens of thousands in the Big Apple, while immigrant activists prepare for May Day actions on Monday and protestors in Nepal topple the gov't and force the King to 'deal' ... a Judge in New York aquits the 'Granny Peace Brigade' and 'graying peaceniks' in Florida find themselves on the Pentagon's 'credible threat list' ... teenagers sue Rumsfield over the recruiting database as the FBI probes classified data leaks ... Congress readies broad new copyright bill as a new coalition vows to "save the Internet" ... a wide coalition in NH rallies to oppose NH's participation in NID as RFID advocates admit that the 'political climate' is 'unfriendly' to the spy chips ... and the VA nurse accused of sedition 'beats the rap'.

Commentaries this week include eulogies for Jane Jacobs, Canadian land use activist who defied ideological 'labeling' and was an activist to the end; The case of the Cuban Five; the latest 'Battle' in New Orleans; several commentaries on the war and activism; using the IRS to quell 'unpopular activism'.

Today marks the end of the annual TV Turnoff Week, if you didn't get to participate this year, check out their website for other activities ... and don't forget to check how you made out in the 2nd annual TCF Combat Rifle Postal Match (targets were due yesterday.)

Til next week

LAND: The week in review April 16-22
Liberty Action News Digest

Immigrant protests continue in the news this week, as well as chilling stories of lockdowns at schools in California (to prevent students from joining protests and walkouts) which forced elementary school students to use buckets for toilets, as bathrooms were 'off limits'. (Anyone STILL think our publik schools aren't prisons?) Immigrant activists back down on plans for a nationwide boycott on MayDay, fearing some could lose jobs. Protestors greeting Chinese dictator Hu on his visit to Dictator Bush are kept well away from both dictators, with the exception of one brave woman who managed to slip into the well guarded meeting and 'tell it like it is', until she was forcibly removed by security guards. In other police state news, commissioners in Florida want to charge protestors feees for exercising their free speech rights; while in Nepal, police simply shoot at demonstrators. And wait til you get a look at the houses deemed 'habitable' by FEMA ...

Commentaries this week on 'Coming Home' (Cindy Sheehan), the anti-war movement's 'growing pains', the upcoming war in Iran, the 'military revolt' (US generals denouncing Rumsfield), a new film about The White Rose (Sophie Scholl: The final days) , 'Muslim charities in the crosshairs', the annual 'Pullitzer farce', eulogies for Rev. William Sloane Coffin and much more!

LAND: The week in review April 10-15
Liberty Action News Digest

Immigration protests in the news again, huge marches continue and activists start planning for a MayDay 'boycott' ... death row inmate challenges lethal injection as 'cruel and usual punishment' ... RAF doctor who refused to serve in Iraq because he believed the war to be illegal jailed for eight months ..... gay and lesbian parents hoping to take their families to the annual White House Easter Egg Roll start lining up Friday evening to make sure they get tickets for the Monday event.... AT&T asks judge to suppress spy evidence .... voters in NH urge the state to be the first to pull out of the National Identification System ....

In police state news, California officers cite 82 year old for crossing a street too slowly ... and to no one's surprise, Herr Bush among is among the annual 2006 Jefferson Muzzle award winners (given by a free-speech group to those it considers the most egregious First Amendment violators in the past year).

Commentaries this week on the immigration protests, National Extortion Day, the occupation and civil war in Iraq and the upcoming war in Iran, the apathy of the American public [Asleep in America, What's it gonna take?) a call for Hand counted paper ballots in 2008, and more!

In actions this week, sign the online petition Don't atack Iran.

LAND: The week in review April 2-9
Liberty Action News Digest

Sorry about the sketchy coverage this week, I was out of town trying to help a very ill relative escape the medical bureaucracy; returned late Thursday night and tried to catch up for y'all...

After a 'Week of walkouts' at schools to support the immigrant protests, and more demonstrations, the US Senate decided to shelve the immigration bill (a standard gov't ploy to make folks forget about an issue) ... but these protestors ('The new civil rights movement') aren't giving up ... as thousands rallied in Texas and other states today, with more demonstrations planned for Monday.

In police state news, a whistle blower from AT&T 'outs' the NSA spy room, the Pentagon admits more spying on activists, and in Tennessee Lawmakers 'rethink' a draconian bill targeting protests.

On the bright side, 24 communities in Wisconsin vote for Iraq pullout and Mennonites in Tennessee whose homes and barns were ravaged by twisters work together to rebuild their homes.

In commentaries this week, don't miss Claire Wolfe's 'Simplicity and prosperity: Observations while on the road', Vin Suprynowicz on "I wanted to like "V for Vendetta" and JPFO's 'V for Vendetta -- questions to consider'. I particularly recommend 'How GI resistance altered the course of history' (a review of 'Sir, No Sir', 'the untold story of the GI movement to end the war in Vietnam')... send this to your friends and family in the military (though it probably won't make it past the censors.)

LAND: The week in review March 26-April 1
Liberty Action News Digest

This week's digest is a day early, as I have a relative in hospital out of state and wanted to get this out before I left.

The week's top activism story in the US continues to be the explosion of the immigration issue, as 'the sleeping giant awakens' ... the largest street protests since the Vietnam War era, students walking out of school in solidarity with the protests. Our 'fearless leaders' in Congress dropped the draconian measures to arrest anyone HELPING 'illegals', but continue to 'debate' whether to imprison 'illegals', deport them, or let them stay as 'guest workers' (if they'll learn English and only take jobs 'Americans' don't want, and build a giant wall to 'keep 'em out'. Me, I'm for open borders and free trade. Anything less is not only 'un-American', it's economically stupid.

In France, student protests continue and public transport workers and teachers staged a one-day national strike to try to force Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin to abandon a new youth job law; Syria re-arrests a dissident writer, smokers vow to ignore the new smoking ban in Scotland,Iran cracks down on bloggers, the Ukraine turns its back on the orange revolution, and US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice arrives in the UK to a reception 'as cool as the weather'.

In police state news here in the US, the tiny town of Dillingham, Alaska has '80 Eyes on 2,400 People', Medical marijuana is back in court (Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit), Kansas pioneers fingerprinting motorists who are stopped by the police and the Supreme Court hears the Hamdan case (which will test the scope of presidential power in the war on terror.)

In good news, the FEC limits censorship of Net political talk. And in Louisiana, doctors protest the closing of Charity Hospital.

In commentaries, more reviews of V for Vendetta, from Claire Wolfe, Lady Liberty and Thomas Creasing; several commentaries on the immigration issue, eminent domain, the war in Iraq.

And if you haven't already, 'make your bid' for 'the one and only working manuscript' of L.Neil Smith's new novel, Ceres, (bidding closes April 18) . Proceeds benefit The Libertarian Enterprise.
