LAND: The week in review March 19-25
Liberty Action News Digest

Biggest activism news this week, thousands protest the Sensenbrenner anti-immigration bill in cities across America, and in Georgia also protest a state anti-immigrant bill with an economic boycott on Friday's 'Day of Dignity'. (For those who don't understand the significance of the draconian Sensenbrenner bill, see the commentary 'Brown skin, yellow star'.) A Monday anti war protest (followup to the mass protests on the weekend) results in arrest of 51 protestors, while civil liberties groups allege that FBI, police spying is rising, the Gestapo tactics of the NYPD in "calming protests" in 2002 is revealed, a NJ Libertarian defeats city document fee in appelate court while another appelate court hands down an awful decision that Fliers "implicitly consent" to be searched. In the UK, peers hand the gopv't yet another defeat on the national ID card, and vow to continue resistance.

Deaths this week, the untimely passing of Dr Chris R Tame, founder and President of the Libertarian Alliance. RIP, Chris.

Commentaries this week on the anti-immigration protests, the Iraq war, the anti-war movement, war tax resistors, and The “My Lai phase” of the Iraq war, free speech and the press, the admission of gov't thugs in TBE that they did indeed seize citizens' guns during Katrina, and several reviews of 'V for Vendetta'. In actions this week, get ready, aim, fire and join the 2nd annual TCF Combat Rifle Postal Match; a new and cool anti-war ribbon-magnet 'Question War', a protest idea to 'Call in sick on Flag Day', and a great new service (you can share this one with your non activist friends) to 'get humans' back into phone service and customer support. And don't miss the updated version of the downloadable 'Patriot Act game', which now includes updates on GITMO, NSA wiretaps, and the renewal of the Patriot Act.

Til next week

LAND: The week in review March 12-18
Liberty Action News Digest

Biggest activism news this week, the worldwide protests 'commemorating' the 3rd anniversary of the invasion of Iraq ... the war that should never have negun, the war that has dragged on for 3 years, with scores of soldiers and civilians dead, Iraq in shambles and in civil war (oh come on, is there anyone with a brain that believes that the ongoing violence and carnage isn't 'civil war'?)

In unsurprising but still depressing news this week, cowardly Democrats on Capitol Hill try to ignore Feingold's resolution to censure Herr Bush. (Oh come on, is there anyone with a brain that will vote for ANY of these cowardly slimeballs next time? Unfortunately, the answer is 'probably yes', the electorate will probably just shuffle to the polls in 06 and vote for 'the lesser evil'.) However, if you're still a voter and would like to TRY to make 'peace and non-intervention' an issue this time, sign the 'Peace Pledge' from Viters For Peace. Can't hurt, eh?

In deaths this week, the passing of Anne Braden, the 'subversive southerner' who spent her life fighting against racism and injustice. (And was a pretty cool lady to boot, though I disagreed with her on economic theory.)

Eminent domain in the news, from Ohio, where an elderly woman is fighting to save her home of 47 years.

In police state news, the Pentagon admits 'errors' spying on protestors, the ACLU lawsuit bnrings out more info about FBI spying on peace groups who were ... oh the horror ... handing out anti-war leaflets!!... and
the NYPD's tactics in arresting demonstrators who were described as 'obviously potential rioters.' in order to chill protest in 2002 are revealed (through another lawsuit) Note ... say what you will about the ACLU, they do an excellent job filing lawsuits on First and Fourth Amendment cases. In commentaries, don't miss Kurt Nimmo's 'Booking First & Fourth Amendment Fifth Columnists' and Clancy Sigal's 'Halliburton gets concentration camp contract'. Having trouble sleeping at night yet, waiting for the knock on the door?

Several good actions this week: The Peace pledge (mentioned above), the Black Shamrock campaign from Ireland, and for all you church going gunnies, Stop the Church Gun Grabbers! And a great 'pep talk' on individual activism from Helen and Harry Highwater at Unknown News!

LAND: The week in review March 5-March 11
Liberty Action News Digest

Top story this week, medical marijuana activist Steve Kubby is free! In other good news, the Colorado teacher who was placed on leave after comparing President Bush’s State of the Union address to speeches by Adolf Hitler has been reinstated (but not before his family got death threats from Bushevik symps.), the Pentagon admits 'errors' in spying on peace protesters and removed their names from the terrorist dbase; the US is closing the infamous Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq (and moving operations to the new Camp Cropper (where Saddam is incarcerated).

In tilting at windmills news this week, civil liberties groups ask courts to shut down Bush spy ring, while the SenateSelect Committee on Intelligence votes to NOT invesitigate domestic spying, but just set up an 'oversight committee' (like the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, which was set up in 12/04 at the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission ... and has never met or hired staff.) Meanwhile, as the public begins to be aware that the Bush spy ring violated the Fourth Amendment, GOP Senators introduce legislation that would effectively repeal the 4th Amendment (without the messiness of the constitutional amendment process) and the Regime launches an intimidation campaign against journalists, threatening to charge them with espionage for the leaks about the domestic spy program.

As military desertions climb with the worsening war in Iraq, the Pentagon hunts down Vietnam era deserters (30 years later), as a 'warning' to present day troops that the state 'never forgets'. In other police state news, FBI grills a professor over his support for Venezuala and FEMA critic George Barisich, who has been selling anti-FEMA T-shirts since last fall, gets cited by Homeland Security for giving away one of the shirts 'on federal property'.

In news around the globe, Pakistan cracks down on protests over Bush visits and unrest in China over rural land grabs, while here at home a village in NY prepares to 'grab' a private golf course under eminent domain.

Deaths this week: Auschwitz escapee William Herskovic 'who escaped from Auschwitz and helped inspire Belgium's resistance to the Nazis during World War II, has died at the age of 91'.

Commentaries this week on domestic spying (NSA eavesdropping and the fourth amendment), the Patriot Act (Compromising civil liberties,State of the state), free speech (Free speech for me but not for you,Who cares about the First Amendment?, The problem of thin-skinned politicos,A free press, a free pass) immigration (Free borders make good neighbors)activism (The action thing,The limits of the Internet,Ghost Walkers haunt Congressional conscience).

In actions this week, Angel Shamaya, founder of KeepAndBearArms.com, jailed March 4 in Michigan on for possession of firearms not properly registered under Michigan law is free on bond ... Angel's court date is March 14, and you can send messages of support or contributions to his defense fund at the Montana Shooting Sports Association "Angel" page at www.marbut.com/Angel/

LAND: The week in review Feb.26-March 5
Source: Liberty Activist News Digest

The top story this week is the untimely death of libertarian activist and former Libertarian Party Presidential Candidate, Harry Browne ... freedom lovers everywhere mourn his passing.

More sad news, medical marijuana activist Steve Kubby loses 25 pounds in three weeks ...

In expected but horrible news this week, the US Senate passed the Patriot Act extension by a disgustingly large margin, with only 4 Senators voting 'no' ... while in other news, a poll of US troops fighting in Iraq reveals that they want OUT NOW ... while the Pentagon admits Iraq's indigenous troops can't fight independently and Seven are arrested in anti-war protest (for supporting the troops, who want to come HOME.)

Getting ready for this years elections? Warren Stewart asks 'Do you know how your vote will be counted?' Worried about privacy? Business Week Online's Olga Khariff gives some privacy tips in 'Big Brother is reading your blog'. Several good First Amendment commentaries this week, Free speech quagmire, and Celebrity castigations. And in the wake of the South Dakota abortion ban, don't miss Linda Circione's 'An open letter to all right-to-life proponents'.

In actions this week, please take a moment to help out a fellow 2AM activist ... Angel Shamaya, founder of KeepAndBearArms.com is in jail in Michigan, having been arrested for possession of firearms not properly registered under Michigan law ... he needs letters of support immediately!

This week's edition marks the 52d weekly edition of LAND ... we start year 2 with next week's edition. Thanks to everyone who has supported us for the past year, your donations, comments and words of support have helped keep LAND online.
